Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24

CALGARY, Alberta, Dec. 18 (UPI) -- Miikka Kiprusoff took a shutout deep into the third period Thursday and the Calgary Flames hung on to defeat Los Angeles 2-1.
The Kings, owners of the best record in the Western Conference, had won eight of their previous 10 games. Calgary snapped a three-game losing streak.
Dion Phaneuf scored on the power play with a single second left in the opening period and Nigel Dawes made it 2-0 62 seconds into the third.
The only goal against Kiprusoff came from Corey Elkins with 8:54 to play in the third. The score was his first in the NHL and came in his second game.
Kiprusoff made 34 saves in earning his 18th victory of the season.
Jonathan Quick allowed two goals on 25 shots to take the loss.
