Mangino settles with Kansas University

LAWRENCE, Kan., Dec. 18 (UPI) -- Kansas University will pay former football coach Mark Mangino a $3 million settlement after his resignation under fire this month.

When he resigned Dec. 3 following allegations he had physically and verbally abused players, Athletic Director Lew Perkins and other school officials had completed an internal review of the allegations, which he firmly denied.

No details were disclosed, but Mangino was replaced by Turner Gill Monday.

The settlement will be paid using private funds raised by Kansas athletics and not state taxpayer money.

"We appreciate the eight years Mark has given to rebuilding our football program," Perkins said in a release reported by the Lawrence Journal World through a request under the Kansas Open Records Act when Mangino resigned.

He was a consensus national Coach of the Year in 2007, but in this season, the Jayhawks compiled a disappointing 5-7 record.
