NHL: Detroit 3, Phoenix 2

DETROIT, Dec. 14 (UPI) -- Kris Newberry, Patrick Evans and Derek Meech scored for Detroit and the Red Wings edged Phoenix 3-2 Monday in their seventh straight win over the Coyotes.

Meech's goal, on a slapshot from just inside the blue line, gave the Wings a two-point lead early in the second period and turned out to be the game-winner.

Jimmy Howard turned in 30 saves, including 11 in the third period, for Detroit, which has won three straight games.

Taylor Pyatt and Radim Vrbata posted the Phoenix goals and Ilya Bryzgalov turned aside 29 shots.
