Freese arrested on suspicion of DWI

ST. LOUIS, Dec. 14 (UPI) -- St. Louis Cardinals player David Freese was arrested in Maryland Heights, Mo., on suspicion of driving drunk, police said.

The 26-year-old was arrested Saturday, Maryland Heights Police Capt. Mike Klos confirmed without elaborating.

"The investigation is ongoing and we're in the process of completing the report," Klos told The St. Louis (Mo.) Post-Dispatch in a story published Monday.

Cardinals General Manager John Mozeliak said little except that he had spoken with Freese after the arrest.

"At this time I do not know all the details," Mozeliak told the Post-Dispatch Sunday. "We are extremely disappointed upon hearing this."

In January, Freese injured his left foot when his car crashed on an ice-slick road en route to a charity event. After surgery, Freese played for the Class AAA team in Memphis, hitting .300 in 56 games.

In late-season play for the Cardinals, Freese proved impressive enough for Mozeliak to suggest he deserved first shot at next season's third-base job with the Cardinals.
