ARLINGTON, Texas, Dec. 10 (UPI) -- Free agent right-hander Rich Harden passed a physical Thursday then signed with the Texas Rangers.
The oft-injured Harden, one of baseball's hardest throwers when healthy, likely becomes the ace of the Rangers' rotation following Wednesday's trade of right-hander Kevin Millwood to Baltimore.
"We absolutely love what Millwood did for the team on the field and in the community," General Manager Jon Daniels said on the Rangers' Web site. "But what this does is give us the opportunity to do some things we otherwise wouldn't be able to do."
Harden will make a base salary of $6.5 million in 2010 with another $3.5 million in incentives if he pitches at least 195 innings. His highest single-season total of innings pitched during his career has been 189 2/3, which he achieved in 2004 while with Oakland.
His career record is 50-29 -- 9-9 in 2009 with the Chicago Cubs -- with a 3.39 ERA in 135 appearances (127 starts) with Oakland and the Cubs, but he has not made 30 starts in a season since making 31 in 2004.
