INDIANAPOLIS, Dec. 7 (UPI) -- Long-time baseball manager Whitey Herzog and umpire Doug Harvey have been elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

The Hall's 16-member Veterans Committee gave Harvey 15 votes and Herzog 14, with 12 needed to win induction. The committee considered a slate of eight managers and two umpires this year. No other nominee got more than eight votes.

The Veterans Committee for executive and pioneers didn't elect any of the 10 people nominated in those categories.

Harvey and Herzog will be inducted July 25. They will be joined by any former players voted in by the Baseball Writers Association of America. That group's vote is to be announced Jan. 6.

Harvey called National League games from 1962-92, working five World Series and six All-Star Games in that span. He worked a total of 4,670 games.

Herzog managed the St. Louis Cardinals to the World Series title in 1982 and NL pennants in 1985 and '87. He previously took the Kansas City Royals to the playoffs three times with American League West titles from 1976-78. He also managed Texas and California, building a 1,281-1,125 record over 18 seasons.
