
SUNRISE, Fla., Dec. 6 (UPI) -- The Atlanta Thrashers scored twice in Saturday's shootout round to take a 2-1 win over Southeast Division rival Florida.
Rich Peverley scored on a wrist shot in the fourth round to ice the win for Atlanta after Ilya Kovalchuck scored in the first round.
Kovalchuk also scored in regulation. Johan Hedberg made 30 saves in goal for the Thrashers.
Stephen Weiss had a goal for the Panthers and Steven Reinprecht tallied in the shootout. Tomas Vokoun turned in 36 saves after missing two starts with a laceration to his ear.
Weiss gave Florida a 1-0 lead at 2:36 of the third period when he deflected a shot from the point off the stick of Dmitri Kulikov.
Kovalchuk knotted the score on a slap shot with 1:04 to play.
Florida made a bid to win the game in overtime by outshooting Atlanta 5-0, but could not get the puck into the net.
