DETROIT, Dec. 1 (UPI) -- Detroit Lions rookie tight end Brandon Pettigrew has a torn knee ligament and is out for the year, Coach Jim Schwartz said Tuesday.
Schwartz said surgery had not yet been scheduled for the torn ACL, suffered during Detroit's 34-12 Thanksgiving Day loss to Green Bay.
"It's more of a fluid thing now," he said. "(The doctors have) found that people have quicker rehabs when they get the swelling down before they operate and let the knee get strong again. It'll depend. We've done that with a couple of the other guys that have had ACLs."
The Lions said losing Pettigrew was a tough blow for the 2-9 team because the rookie tight end had made progress in recent weeks. In the three games prior to the injury, he had made 15 catches for 165 yards and two touchdowns.
"Really for him, it was the last six games that was really something that was starting to take off," said Schwartz. "And he was a major part of that game plan on Thursday."
