RALEIGH, N.C., Dec. 1 (UPI) -- Carolina defenseman Joe Corvo has been placed on injured reserve and will miss at least two months of the NHL schedule because of a leg laceration.

Corvo's lower right leg was cut by a skate when he collided with Washington defenseman Karl Alzner during the first period of the Hurricanes' loss Monday to the Capitals. The injury occurred shortly after Corvo scored his fourth goal of the season.

Corvo was taken to a hospital for surgery on the laceration.

"I was told that everything came out fine," Carolina General Manager Jim Rutherford said to The News & Observer newspaper in Raleigh, N.C. "No concern for the long term but certainly it's going to take a long time to heal."

The team said Tuesday Corvo will miss 8-12 weeks because of the injury.

Corvo is the Hurricanes' leading scorer among defensemen with four goals and eight assists.
