MONTREAL, Nov. 28 (UPI) -- Washington topped the Montreal Canadiens 4-3 Saturday on a shootout goal by Nicklas Backstrom.
Backstrom snapped the game-winner over Carey Price's blocker in the fifth round for the only goal of the shootout.
Backstrom also played a key role in the goal by Eric Fehr that tied the score in the closing seconds and sent it into overtime. Backstrom won an offensive-zone draw that went to Alex Ovechkin, who fired a slap shot that Price stopped, but Fehr knocked in the rebound to make it 3-3 with 11.4 seconds to play in regulation.
Fehr and Ovechkin scored 1:12 apart in the first period to stake the Caps to a 2-0 lead. Montreal battled back to tie in the second period on a goal by Jaroslav Spacek at 5:40 and Tomas Hamrlik, who jammed in a rebound at 13:50.
Montreal took a 3-2 lead on Travis Moen's power-play goal at 5:34 of the third period.
Semyon Varlamov had 21 saves in the won. Price finished the night with 20 saves.
