SACRAMENTO, Nov. 28 (UPI) -- Tyreke Evans paced Sacramento to a 109-96 win over New Jersey Friday, pushing the Nets to the edge of an infamous NBA record.

New Jersey has lost all 16 games it has played this season, one setback shy of equaling the worst start to a campaign in league history.

The Nets must defeat the defending champion Los Angeles Lakers Sunday to avoid tying the record held by Miami and the Los Angeles Clippers.

Miami went 0-17 to start in 1988 and the Clippers did so in 1999.

New Jersey also equaled the franchise's longest losing streak, set during January and February of 1978.

Evans scored 21 points to lead the Kings. Spencer Hawes had 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Devin Harris had 25 for the Nets, who climbed to within six in the third period, thanks to an 11-point run.
