MORGANTOWN, W.Va., Nov. 27 (UPI) -- Tyler Bitancurt kicked a 43-yard field goal as time expired Friday, giving West Virginia a surprise 19-16 win over ninth-ranked Pittsburgh.
Pittsburgh rallied from a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter to tie it on a 50-yard throw from Bill Stull to Jonathan Baldwin with 2:54 remaining, but the Mountaineers then drove 42 yards in nine plays to the winning field goal.
It was the fourth field goal of the game for Bitancurt, who also had kicks of 53 yards in the second period, 42 yards in the third and 39 yards early in the fourth for a 16-6 lead.
West Virginia improved to 8-3 with a closing regular-season game yet to play against Rutgers. The Mountaineers are 4-2 in the Big East Conference.
Pittsburgh lost for only the second time in 11 games this season and despite the setback, will have a chance to share the Big East title next week with a victory over fifth-ranked Cincinnati.
The only other Panthers loss this year came at North Carolina State on Sept. 26.
Noel Devine gave West Virginia a 13-6 lead with an 88-yard run with 4:34 to play in the third quarter.
