CNN suspends Martin for Super Bowl tweets
CAPE TOWN, South Africa, Nov. 26 (UPI) -- Soccer authorities in Europe and South Africa said ahead of next week's World Cup multiple investigations are being carried out into alleged match-fixing.
The Union of European Football Associations said a German police investigation that led to 15 arrests sparked separate investigations into three referees and soccer clubs KF Tirana and KS Vllaznia in Albania, FC Dinaburg in Latvia, Slovenia's NK IB Ljubljana and Hungary's Budapest Honved FC, CNN reported Thursday.
The UEFA said "around 40 fixtures in Europe were considered suspicious in terms of results."
Meanwhile, soccer officials in South Africa, host of the upcoming World Cup, said a corruption investigation into domestic league officials is being extended for consideration of new revelations.
"We have initiated an investigation on this matter relating to referees, and already we have effected suspensions and, in some instances, demotions," South African Football Association President Kirsten Nematandani said.
