Runyan issued a statement declaring this would be his final season in the NFL and that he would turn to politics and run for Congress as a Republican against Rep. Jon Adler, D-N.J., the Burlington County (Pa.) Times reported Tuesday night.

Runyan was the starting right tackle for the Eagles from 2000 through 2008 and played three years for the Houston Oilers-Tennessee Titans franchise.

The 35-year-old Michigan product had microfracture surgery on his right knee in February, but said Tuesday he was in good shape and had been training while looking for a new team.
