HUNTSVILLE, Texas, Nov. 23 (UPI) -- Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas, has fired football Coach Todd Whitten, who has been with the team for five seasons.

Athletic Director Bobby Williams said Whitten, whose team was 5-6 this season "has been relieved of his duties."

Whitten's record as coach of the Bearkats was 25-28 overall and 16-17 in the Southland Conference. He formerly was an offensive coordinator for the team and coached at Tarleton State University for six years.

"I want to thank all the players and the assistant coaches on our staff for all their hard work over the last five seasons," Whitten said. "I've had the opportunity to work with some outstanding young men."
