NHL: Carolina 6, Toronto 5 (SO)

RALEIGH, N.C., Nov. 19 (UPI) -- Carolina's Erik Cole scored with 3 seconds left in regulation to force overtime Thursday and the Hurricanes produced two shootout goals to defeat Toronto 6-5.

The game brought together the teams with the worst records in the NHL. Both sides had just three victories prior to Thursday and every other club in the league had at least twice that many.

The hard-luck Maple Leafs were denied the victory by Cole's late score and they went on to lose in overtime for the sixth time this season.

Tuomo Ruutu and Jussi Jokinen scored in the shootout, during which Manny Legace turned aside the only two shots he faced.

Carolina never led during regulation play and had to overcome a 3-0 deficit after one period.

Tim Gleason scored his third and fourth goals of the season less than 4 minutes apart in the third period to rally Carolina into a 4-4 tie, after which Ian White appeared to have wrapped up the game for Toronto.

White scored with 30 seconds left in regulation for a 5-4 lead but Cole's wrister got past Jonas Gustavsson to send the game into overtime. Legace stopped 25 shots and Gustavsson made 40 saves.
