LOS ANGELES, Nov. 19 (UPI) -- Los Angeles Galaxy forward Landon Donovan was named Thursday as the Most Valuable Player of the 2009 Major League Soccer season.

Donovan, 27, scored 12 goals and had six assists in 25 games this season. He was named to his ninth straight MLS All-Star team and is just four goals away from becoming the youngest MLS player to reach 100 for a career.

"He's grown on the field as a player," Los Angeles Coach Bruce Arena said. "He's a more mature, consistent player."

Donovan is the second Los Angeles player to win the award, which was first handed out in 1996. Carlos Ruiz of the Galaxy captured the honor in 2002.

Last year's winner was Guillermo Barros Schelotto of the Columbus Crew.
