
CHAPEL HILL, N.C., Nov. 15 (UPI) -- Deon Thompson had 20 points Sunday to lead fourth-ranked North Carolina to an 88-77 win over Valparaiso.
The reigning national champions improved to 3-0, winning all of their games by double figures.
Thompson, who also had eight rebounds, scored 16 points in the second half. Ed Davis scored 16 with six rebounds, Larry Drew II scored 13 with four assists, Tyler Zeller scored 12 and Marcus Ginyard scored five points with eight assists for the Tar Heels, who led by only 38-31 at the half.
Brandon Wood led Valpo with a game-high 30 points. Brandon McPherson, the only other Valparaiso player to reach double figures, scored 20 for the Crusaders (0-2), who lost their opener to Ball State 88-78 Friday.
McPherson's 3-pointer drew Valparaiso within 84-75 with 1:47 remaining but the Crusaders never got any closer the rest of the way.
