WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind., Nov. 13 (UPI) -- Robbie Hummel helped No. 7 Purdue get off to a blazing start Friday and the Boilermakers went on to crush California State-Northridge 89-64.
Hummel scored 17 points, making 6-of-9 shots from the field. JaJuan Johnson chipped in 15 points and D.J. Byrd had 13.
Purdue took a 9-3 lead in the game's first 90 seconds, then ran off 19 straight points to turn the season-opening contest into an instant runaway. Johnson had 10 points during the surge and Hummel added five.
The Matadors, who won the Big West Conference last season before losing to Memphis in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, got 18 points from Kevin Menner.
Purdue made it past the first two rounds of the national tournament last season, then fell to Connecticut.
