DETROIT, Nov. 12 (UPI) -- Henrik Zetterberg scored the go-ahead goal 8 minutes deep into the third period Thursday and the Detroit Red Wings went on to down Vancouver 3-1.

The Red Wings, coming off a nine-goal effort against Columbus in their most one-sided victory of the season, found themselves locked in a low-scoring game heading into the final stanza.

Zetterberg gave Detroit the lead, however, with a backhander that eluded Roberto Luongo and Niklas Kronwall put one into an empty net with 56 seconds remaining.

Detroit vaulted past Columbus into second place in the Central Division, one point behind the idle Chicago Blackhawks.

Tomas Holmstrom tipped in a shot by Zetterberg late in the first period and Vancouver tied it in the second on a power-play goal by Mason Raymond.

Jimmy Howard made 31 saves to get the win.
