KANSAS CITY, Mo., Nov. 9 (UPI) -- The Kansas City Chiefs Monday cut running back Larry Johnson, who was recently suspended after posting anti-gay comments on the Internet.

The 29-year-old Johnson, who set an NFL single-season record with 416 rushing attempts in 2006, carried 132 times for 358 yards and caught 12 passes for 76 yards but didn't score a touuchdown this season.

Johnson was given a two-week suspension after posting what officials said were demeaning comments about Chiefs Coach Todd Haley and using anti-gay slurs on his Twitter account on the Internet.

"I regret my actions," Johnson said through a spokesman. "The words were used by me in frustration, and they were not appropriate. I did not intend to offend anyone, but that is no excuse for what I said."

The running back was released as his suspension came to an end.

The Chiefs chose Johnson in the 2003 NFL Draft. He ran for 5,996 yards and 55 touchdowns and caught 151 passes for 1,369 yards and six TDs in 75 games, but his career was marred by off-field problems.

Johnson pleaded guilty in March to two counts of disturbing the peace in incidents at Kansas City nightclubs.
