BERKELEY, Calif., Nov. 7 (UPI) -- No. 23 California lost a game and its star running back, Jahvid Best, Saturday, dropping a 31-14 decision to Oregon State.

The Beavers rode quarterback Sean Canfield's 342 passing yards, two passing touchdowns and one rushing score to the win, while Joe Halahuni hauled down six grabs for 128 yards as Oregon State upped its record to 6-3 overall and 4-2 in the Pac 10.

California (6-3, 3-3) mounted a 15-play drive capped a touchdown run by Best to pull within 14-7 game with 6:07 to play in the half, but Oregon State answered with its own long drive -- an 11-play, 56-yard effort -- highlighted by a momentum-changing Canfield-to-Jordan Bishop 3-yard TD pass to give the Beavers a 21-7 halftime lead.

Best hurt himself on the TD run, landing on his back as his helmet flew off. He has taken off on a stretcher and transported to a local hospital where an early diagnosis indicated a concussion with full movement in all his limbs.
