Report: Meyer increases Spikes' suspension

GAINESVILLE, Fla., Nov. 4 (UPI) -- Florida Coach Urban Meyer said linebacker Brandon Spikes has been suspended for Saturday's game against Vanderbilt over an eye-gouging incident against Georgia.

Meyer had said the suspension, for gouging the eye of running back Washaun Ealey during last Saturday's 41-17 win over arch-rival Georgia, would be for half a game. He said after practice Wednesday the suspension would be fore a full game, the Florida Times-Union reported.

"A lot of the negative things out there really weighing heavy on (Spikes') heart right now, and so as a group we decided the best interest (is) just for the team to not play him Saturday," Meyer said.

Spikes, a 6-foot-3 inch, 259-pound senior from Shelby, N.C., leads Florida's defense with 42 tackles.

He has three sacks and an interception return for a touchdown.

He was a semi-finalist last season for the Chuck Bednarik Award, given to the nation's top linebacker.
