Blue Jays' Wells to undergo surgery

Published: Nov. 3, 2009 at 8:24 PM

TORONTO, Nov. 3 (UPI) -- Toronto Blue Jays center fielder Vernon Wells is set to undergo surgery on his left wrist, the team said Tuesday.

Team officials didn't say when Wells would undergo the procedure, but said Dr. Donald Sheridan would perform the surgery in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Wells struggled in 2009, posting only a .260 average with 15 homers, 66 runs batted in and a .311 on-base percentage over 158 games. Wells' power numbers were his worst since 2001.

Wells broke the same wrist while making a diving catch against the Indians in May of 2008.
