SAN JOSE, Calif., Oct. 31 (UPI) -- Evgeni Nabokov allowed only a shorthanded goal in the third period and made 23 saves Friday, carrying San Jose to a 3-1 victory over Colorado.
Colorado had won four in a row and set a franchise record for October victories with 10, but the Avalanche could not solve Nabokov.
The San Jose goaltender won for the fourth time in five starts and helped boost the Sharks past Los Angeles into the lead in the Pacific Division.
Ryane Clowe put San Jose in front for good, scoring his first goal of the season with 6 seconds remaining in the second period.
Dany Heatley's ninth goal of the year gave San Jose a 2-0 lead 3:59 into the third, after which Matt Duchene broke up Nabokov's bid for a shutout.
Jamie McGinn answered for the Sharks just 30 seconds later. Craig Anderson turned aside 40 shots in taking the loss.
