Islanders end Washington's six-game win streak
WASHINGTON, Oct. 30 (UPI) -- Mark Streit fired a slap shot past Jose Theodore 53 seconds into overtime Friday, giving the New York Islanders a 4-3 decision over Washington.
The Capitals had a six-game winning streak halted, but they have still produced at least one point in 11 out of 13 games this season.
Tomas Fleischmann scored his first two goals of the new season in the second period to lift Washington into a 3-2 lead, but Frans Nielsen tied it with 2:10 left in the second.
The contest remained deadlocked throughout the third period.
Washington superstar Alex Ovechkin, trying to lead the league in goal scoring for the third straight year, had a power-play tally in the opening period. It was his 14th goal of the season.
Dwayne Roloson got the win by stopping 36-of-39 shots.
The Islanders have won back-to-back games for the first time since last March and ended their latest losing streak at three. It was New York's first road win this season.
Celtics choose not to suspend Davis
BOSTON, Oct. 30 (UPI) -- The Boston Celtics announced Friday forward Glen "Big Baby" Davis would not be suspended, despite the fact he had fractured a thumb in a fight.
Boston Executive Vice President Danny Ainge made the announcement prior to Boston's game with Chicago.
Davis injured the thumb in a brawl with a childhood friend that left both men bloodied. Davis will be lost to the team for about six weeks.
"We have that option to either have him around or suspend him and not have him around and so it's pretty simple," Ainge said. "Glen is well-liked by his teammates and I think the better chance of him coming back and being prepared to play when he's healthy is being with the team."
"It was a stupid mistake," said Davis, who attended the news conference with Ainge. "I have learned from this and am looking forward. I'm glad the owners and the organization are welcoming me back with open arms."
Davis had surgery Thursday.
Major Leaguers name Pujols Player of Year
NEW YORK, Oct. 30 (UPI) -- Major League Baseball players have chosen St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols as Player of the Year in 2009.
The honor was announced Friday, the day after Pujols was voted the top player in the National League.
Pujols batted .327 and led the league with 47 home runs, 124 runs scored, a .443 on-base percentage and 374 total bases. He also drove in 135 runs.
The Cardinals won their fourth National League Central title in six years and then were swept by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the opening round of the playoffs.
Pujols has won both the MLB and league top-player honors three times, all while with the Cardinals.
The award is one of the Players Choice Awards announced each year by the Major League Baseball Players Association.
A $50,000 donation will be made by the MLB Players Trust to a charity chosen by Pujols.
Cook takes Schwab lead with course record
SONOMA, Calif., Oct. 30 (UPI) -- John Cook shot a course-record 62 Friday that vaulted him into a three-shot lead at the 36-hole mark of the Charles Schwab Cup Championship.
Cook, who is seeking his second victory in three weeks, equaled the two-round tournament scoring record at 14-under 130. He made 10 birdies, so many he admitted he lost track during the round.
Watson shot a bogey-free 64 at the Sonoma Golf Club and Blackmar had a 67 to finish at 11-under 133.
Those tied for fourth at 135 were Russ Cochran, Brad Bryant and Jeff Sluman.
Cook finished his day with a spectacular shot from a fairway bunker to set up a birdie at the 18th.
"It really seriously was one of the best shots I've ever hit," Cook said. "It was really close to the edge of the bunker. I could have caught the lip and hit myself."
Loren Roberts, the Charles Schwab Cup points leader, struggled to a 73 and was in 25th place in the 29-man field.
