New York Yankees Derek Jeter leaps over Philadelphia Phillies Shane Victorino and throws to first base for a double play in the eighth inning in game 2 of the World Series at Yankee Stadium in New York

NEW YORK, Oct. 29 (UPI) -- A.J. Burnett struck out nine Thursday, New York homered twice off Pedro Martinez and the Yankees deadlocked the World Series with a 3-1 win over Philadelphia.

In a tense duel the Yankees desperately needed to win, New York survived a bad call late in the game and closer Mariano Rivera benefited from a key double play in the eighth to protect the lead.

After splitting two games in New York, the teams head to Philadelphia for Game 3 Saturday. The Phillies will host the next three contests.

Martinez, who often tormented the Yankees while with Boston, was handed a 1-0 lead on a two-out, RBI single by Matt Stairs in the second. Burnett then shut the door through seven innings, allowing four hits and walking two while throwing 108 pitches.

Mark Teixeira tied it in the fourth by hitting the first pitch of the inning over the wall in right. Hideki Matsui gave the Yankees the lead in the sixth when, with two away, he golfed a pitch below his knees two rows deep into the right field seats.

The third New York run came in the seventh on consecutive singles by Jerry Hairston, Melky Cabrera and Jorge Posada. The Yankees lost a chance for more when it was ruled first baseman Ryan Howard caught Johnny Damon's soft liner on the fly and turned it into an inning-ending double play.

Replays showed, however, the ball hit the ground an instant before hopping into Howard's glove.

The umpiring error did not affect the game thanks to Rivera, who put two runners on in the eighth and gave up a two-out double in the ninth without surrendering a run. It was his fourth save of these playoffs and 38th of his post-season career.
