VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Oct. 28 (UPI) -- Jason Williams climaxed a wild third period by scoring the winning goal with 5:03 remaining Tuesday to give the Detroit Red Wings a 5-4 victory over Vancouver.
The struggling Red Wings ended a three-game losing streak and Vancouver was denied what would have been its sixth straight home victory.
The Canucks opened the third period with a 2-1 lead but lost the advantage during the opening half of the stanza. They regained the lead but then saw the Red Wings move in front on back-to-back goals by Pavel Datsyuk -- the first goals of the season for Datsyuk, who scored a career-high 32 goals last season.
Henrik Sedin brought Vancouver back into a tie with 7:53 to play, but Williams produced the deciding goal with Willie Mitchell in the penalty box for high sticking.
The Red Wings began the game in fourth place in the Central Division. It was Detroit's first road win in six tries this season.
Chris Osgood gave up two goals on the first two shots he saw and was replaced by Jimmy Howard, who got the win by stopping 20-of-22 shots the rest of the way.
Roberto Luongo gave up all five Detroit goals on 42 shots.
