NEW YORK, Oct. 28 (UPI) -- Cliff Lee went the distance Wednesday and Philadelphia opened its bid for a second straight World Series title by beating the New York Yankees 6-1.

Lee did not allow a run until the ninth inning and that one was unearned. He struck out 10 while throwing 123 pitches in cool, often rainy weather.

Chase Utley hit two homers off Yankees ace CC Sabathia and the Phillies added two runs each in the eighth and ninth innings to take a 1-0 lead in the 105th World Series. New York will host Game 2 Thursday.

Philadelphia defeated the Yankees in a World Series game for the first time in franchise history. New York swept the Phillies in their only other championship meeting 59 years ago.

Although the Yankees have a record 26 World Series titles to their credit, it is the Phillies who have had the most recent success. They defeated Tampa Bay in six games to win the title a year ago.

Utley, who had hit just one home run since mid-September, barely cleared the wall with his first homer in the third. He then crushed a Sabathia pitch deep into the right field seats in the sixth.

Sabathia struck out six and gave up only the two runs on four hits over seven innings.

Raul Ibanez singled home two runs in the eighth against David Robertson, the third pitcher of the inning, and Philadelphia added two in the ninth on an RBI single by Shane Victorino and a run-producing double by Ryan Howard.

Lee started his fourth game of this year's playoffs and has a 3-0 record. In 33 post-season innings, he has given up two earned runs and struck out 30.
