KANSAS CITY, Mo., Oct. 28 (UPI) -- The father of Kansas City Chiefs star Larry Johnson said the NFL running back was raised not to utter derogatory slurs.

Speaking in the wake of his son apologizing for uttering gay slurs in public twice during a 24-hour period, Larry Johnson Sr. explained how he taught his son not to use derogatory or hateful words, The Kansas City (Mo.) Star reported Tuesday.

"That's just not who we are and not what we believe," Johnson Sr., 56, said. "It's not how he was raised."

Johnson, 29, used a gay slur on his Twitter profile in reference to Chiefs coach Todd Haley, before using another gay slur while speaking with reporters Monday morning.

While the younger Johnson apologized Tuesday, he was instructed by his NFL team to stay away from the Chiefs' headquarters and team activities.

Johnson remains on the Chief's roster and will still be paid despite the team's response to his recent comments, the Star reported.

An unidentified NFL spokesman said league officials are investigating the incident involving the Chiefs' running back.
