NEW YORK, Oct. 27 (UPI) -- New York Yankees player Derek Jeter sent gifts and words of encouragement to a 16-month-old heart transplant patient who shares his name, the boy's parents say.

Jeter Villacis, who had surgery two weeks ago after being diagnosed with an enlarged heart in August, will go home with a Yankees backpack filled with more team items, such as a doll, hats, team clothes, a book, and -- most important -- the letter from the Yankees star, the New York Daily News reported Tuesday.

"Life is a daily challenge, some more challenging than others, but you are a true star for giving it your all, and I strongly admire your strength and courage," the shortstop said in a heartfelt letter after reading about the little boy's plight in the Daily News.

Little Jeter's parents, Robert Villacis, 35, and Vanessa Franco, 23, said they got a smile from their child when they presented him with the gifts.

"We are very thankful that Jeter took time to write a letter and send us gifts. I did not expect this. I wish Jeter more luck in baseball so that he can continue helping children," said Robert.

The boy is expected to make a complete recovery, the newspaper reported.
