
LYON, France, Oct. 27 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga survived an upset bid by Kevin Kim Tuesday in the opening round of the Lyon Tennis Grand Prix in France.
Tsonga, a former runner-up at the Australian Open, defeated Kim 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-5) and will face either Olivier Rochus or Vincent Millot in the second round.
Rochus and Millot will square off Wednesday.
Ivan Ljubicic, the No. 3 seed and winner of this tournament eight years ago, advanced with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Martin Vassallo Arguello. No. 7 seed Benjamin Becker defeated Paolo Lorenzi 6-2, 6-2.
Fabrice Santoro, who has announced this season will be his last on the tour, played his final match in Lyon when he fell to No. 8 seed Albert Montanes. Santoro, 36, won his first ATP championship here in 1997.
Arnaud Clement, another former Lyon champion, moved on with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Oscar Hernandez. Clement was the tournament winner in 2000.
