Jed Hoyer named GM of Padres

SAN DIEGO, Oct. 26 (UPI) -- Jed Hoyer became general manager of the San Diego Padres Monday, the team announced.

Hoyer, 35, formerly an executive with the Boston Red Sox, replaces Kevin Towers, who was fired this month.

"Jed comes from a championship organization where he gained hands-on experience for a club that has had tremendous success in its baseball operations, and particularly in player development," Padres owner Jeff Moorad said.

Hoyer was a senior vice president and assistant general manager with the Red Sox.

San Diego had a 75-87 record this season.
