Report: Padres name Boston's Hoyer as GM

SAN DIEGO, Oct. 24 (UPI) -- The San Diego Padres have hired Red Sox executive Jed Hoyer to be their new general manager, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported Saturday.

Hoyer, an assistant general manager in Boston, will replace Kevin Towers and will be formally introduced Monday at a news conference at Petco Park, sources told the newspaper.

Hoyer, 35, has spent seven years in Boston as a right hand of Theo Epstein, the executive vice president and general manager, and was involved in the trades that brought Curt Schilling, Josh Beckett and Mike Lowell to the Sox.

The Union-Tribune said Hoyer, a former college pitcher, had a good head for quantitative analysis and experience in scouting.

Along with switching leagues, Hoyer will be moving to a club that has been making the best of a tight payroll and has been trying to establish a core of young players who can compete in the National League West.
