SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., Oct. 24 (UPI) -- Troy Matteson set a PGA record for the best 36-hole score Saturday to secure the lead at the Frys.com Open in Scottsdale with a 194.
Matteson shot a 9-under-par 61 for the second consecutive day and held a three-shot lead over Webb Simpson, Tim Clark and Chris Stroud.
"It's just been unbelievable. I've never even shot a 61 prior to this week," Matteson said. "To shoot two of them, I don't even know what to say. I am just making a lot of birdies out there and hitting a lot of good shots and keeping my ball in play."
Matteson sizzled with 10 birdies and a lone bogey during the round. He had four birdies and a par on his last five holes.
"I've had a lot of good looks at it over the last two days, and I've had a lot of easy putts," Matteson said.
His 36-hole score of 122 broke Mark Calvavecchia's record of 124, set at the 2001 Phoenix Open.
The course at Grayhawk could be described as being fairly generous Saturday with three aces recorded during the round.
