VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Oct. 24 (UPI) -- Two first-period, power-play goals staked Vancouver to an early lead that Roberto Luongo parlayed into a 3-1 win Saturday over the winless Toronto Maple Leafs.

Mason Raymond and Ryan Kesler scored late in the first period to put the Canucks ahead 2-0 and Luongo made 35 saves in the contest.

Raymond scored a second goal into an empty net in the waning seconds of the game as Toronto mounted a furious extra-man attack on Luongo.

Niklas Hagman had the only Toronto goal, cutting Vancouver's lead to 2-1 on a power play with 3:14 to play in the second period.

Toronto fell to 0-7-1, the worst start in the storied history of the franchise. The Leafs' all-time longest losing streak is 10 games, a dubious mark achieved in 1967. They have not lost eight consecutive games since 2006.
