MOSCOW, Oct. 22 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Vera Zvonareva won just two games Thursday in losing in a second-round rout at the $1 million Kremlin Cup tennis tournament in Moscow.
Zvonareva, who lost to Jelena Jankovic in last year's Kremlin Cup finals, fell 6-0, 6-2 to Tsvetana Pironkova. Zvonareva had her serve broken five times in seven games while Pironkova won 59 percent of the points on Zvonareva's serve.
Jankovic, seeded second, battled through four double faults and three service breaks in a 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 win Thursday over Lucie Safarova and advanced to the tournament quarterfinals. She next goes against Alisa Kleybanova, who was a 6-1, 6-2 winner over Evgeniya Rodina in her Thursday match.
Other second-round results had eighth-seeded Francesca Schiavone taking out Monica Niculescu 6-2, 7-5; Vera Dushevina topping Agnes Szavay 3-6, 6-4, 6-3; and Maria Kirilenko beating Aleksandra Wozniak 6-4, 6-3.
In addition to the Jankovic-Kleybanova pairing, Friday's quarterfinals pit Schiavone against Kirilenko, Olga Govortsova versus Dushevina and Pironkova against Alona Bondarenko.
The tournament concludes Sunday with a championship match worth $157,427 to the winner.
