MOSCOW, Oct. 22 (UPI) -- No. 6 Janko Tipsarevic, the highest seed on Thursday's schedule, won his match at the Kremlin Cup in a walkover over Christophe Rochus.

Tipsarevic won the second-rounder when Rochus retired with an undisclosed illness, facing a 4-6, 1-2 deficit.

Also, former World No. 1 and unseeded Marat Safin, playing before a native crowd for the last time, was a 4-6, 6-7 (4-7) loser to countryman Evgeny Korolev.

"It didn't go my way today," said Safin, who will retire at season's end.

"It is a shame to lose him because he is still young," Korolev said. "(But) it is his decision to stop."

Other winners were Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan; Ukrainian Illya Marchenko and American Robby Ginepri.

Friday's quarterfinal matches feature Mikhail Youzhny vs. Sergiy Stakhovsky; Pablo Cuevas- vs. Kukushkin; Tipsarevic vs. Ginepri; and Korolev vs. Marchenko.
