The surprise French Open runner-up and the No. 10 player in the latest men's world rankings, rolled to a 6-1, 6-3 victory over unseeded Andreas Seppi of Italy. He won the match's final five games and recorded three service breaks on the way to winning the first set.

Unseeded Olivier Rochus of Belgium beat No. 8 seed Feliciano Lopez of Spain 4-6, 6-4, 6-1; unseeded Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus topped American Robert Kendrick 6-2, 6-2; France's Arnaud Clement downed Germany's Michael Berrer 3-6, 7-6 (9-7), 6-1; and No. 2 seed Tommy Haas of Germany failed to play Finland's Jarkko Nieminen, citing the flu, giving Nieminen a walkover victory.
