MONTREAL, Oct. 22 (UPI) -- Jaroslav Halak allowed only a shorthanded goal in making his third start of the season Thursday, boosting Montreal to a 5-1 victory over the New York Islanders.
One night after winning their first game of the year, the Islanders surrendered 43 shots and faced a 3-0 deficit before they managed a goal.
Halak made 21 saves and gave up a goal to Josh Bailey 54 seconds into the third period.
Scott Gomez put Montreal in front with a wrist shot 7:55 into the game and Marc-Andre Bergeron gave the Canadiens a 2-0 lead after one period.
Max Pacioretty, Mike Cammalleri and Maxim Lapierre also scored for Montreal, which won its second straight after five consecutive losses, and which also produced its largest goal total of the season.
The Islanders have lost seven of their eight games this year, three of the setbacks coming in overtime.
