The National League team termed the operation, performed by Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala., "successful." The arthroscopic procedure was a "debridement" of bone spurs in addition to the removal of bone chips from Pujols's throwing arm elbow.

The operation was unrelated to a nerve operation Pujols had last year.

The Cardinals said Pujols was expected to immediately begin rehabilitation and should be ready to play by spring training next year.

Pujols hit .327 and with 47 home runs and 135 runs batted in last season. He has batted .334 and has hit 366 home runs over a nine-year career, all with St. Louis. Pujols has been voted the NL Most Valuable Player twice (2005, 2008) and has been selected to the All-Star team eight times. He is considered a front-runner to win the MVP award this year.

Kiffin finally signs deal with Tennessee

KNOXVILLE, Tenn., Oct. 21 (UPI) -- Lane Kiffin, six games into his tenure as the Tennessee Volunteers football coach, has signed his six-year contract with the school.

Kiffin was hired in December to take over the Volunteers' program and has been working under an agreement in principle while attorneys worked out contract details.

The Knoxville News Sentinel, which obtained a copy of the agreement through a Freedom of Information Act request, said Kiffin would receive more than $14 million over the life of the deal. The total includes a base pay and compensation for radio and television services, equipment shoe and apparel contracts' and endorsement or consultation contracts.

If the university were to buy out the contract this year or 2010, it would owe Kiffin $7.5 million. The buy out clause slides to $6.25 million in 2011-12 and $5 million in 2013-14. If Kiffin opted out, he would own the school as much as $1 million.

The Volunteers are 3-3 under Kiffin.

Phillips and ESPN declined immediate comment on the scandal that broke in the New York Post Wednesday. A source told the newspaper Phillips had been suspended for a week.

The Post said Phillips, 46, admitted to a summer fling with ESPN production assistant Brooke Hundley. He told police the harassment began soon after he broke it off.

Hundley allegedly contacted Phillips' son by e-mail and at one of his football practices. She also allegedly badgered Marni Phillips with phone calls and text messages, and confronted her in the driveway of the Phillips home.
