Top 2 men's seeds win at Stockholm

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Oct. 21 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Robin Soderling and second-seeded Tommy Haas won their opening round matches Wednesday at the Stockholm Open.

Soderling, of Sweden -- a home crowd favorite and the French Open runner-up -- easily handled Giovanni Lapentti of Ecuador 6-3, 6-0. Haas, of Germany, dispatched Frenchman Florent Serra 6-3, 6-4.

In second-round action Wednesday, Joachim Johansson of Sweden fired 11 aces and surprised fourth-seeded Juan Monaco of Argentina 6-4, 6-4.

Former Australian Open runner-up Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus eliminated third-seeded former world No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain 6-4, 6-2. Feliciano Lopez of Spain, the eighth seed, dropped Latvian Ernests Gulbis 6-2, 6-4.

Soderling, ranked No. 10 in the world, will meet Andres Seppi of Italy, and Haas will take on Jarkko Nieminen of Finland when the second round resumes Thursday.
