UNIONDALE, N.Y., Oct. 21 (UPI) -- Jeff Tambellini, Frans Nielsen and John Tavares scored shootout goals Wednesday and the New York Islanders beat Carolina 4-3 for their first win of the season.
The win by the Islanders leaves Toronto as the only NHL team without a victory this season.
New York opened the season with three straight overtime setbacks before losing three straight in regulation.
The Islanders took a 3-1 lead into the third period against the Hurricanes before Eric Staal and Jussi Jokinen scored in a span of 74 seconds to tie it. Jokinen's goal came with 4:57 to play.
New York was then perfect on its three shootout efforts against Dwayne Roloson, who made 35 saves in regulation and overtime. Carolina lost its fourth straight.
Cam Ward stopped 25-of-28 shots before surrendering a goal to Jokinen in the shootout.
