BOSTON, Oct. 21 (UPI) -- Marc Savard, the leading scorer for the Boston Bruins this season, will miss 4-6 weeks because of a broken foot, the NHL team said Wednesday.

It wasn't clear when Savard, 32, suffered the injury to his left foot. He played Saturday in the Bruins' most recent game. Boston placed Savard, a center, on the long-term injured reserve list, filling the roster spot with forward Trent Whitfield.

Savard has four goals and three assists over the Bruins' seven games this season. He has been the team's leading scorer each of the last three seasons. In 2008-09 he had 25 goals and 63 assists.

Whitfield, called up from Providence of the American Hockey League, has appeared in 177 NHL games, scoring 11 goals and earning 17 assists. He signed with the Bruins as a free agent this summer and had three goals and five assists in six AHL games this season. He previously played for Washington, the New York Rangers and St. Louis.
