PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 20 (UPI) -- Jimmy Rollins drove a two-run double to deep right with two out in the ninth Monday, giving Philadelphia a dramatic 5-4 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Phillies took a 3-1 lead in the National League Championship Series and will try to earn their second straight World Series trip Wednesday when they host Game 5.
Los Angeles came back from an early 2-0 deficit and seemed ready to draw even in the series when George Sherrill and Jonathan Broxton produced clutch pitching to get out of a jam in the eighth inning.
Broxton, who got the final out in the eighth, retired Raul Ibanez on a grounder to second to open the ninth and then ran into trouble.
Pinch-hitter Matt Stairs drew a four-pitch walk from Broxton and, after Eric Bruntlett ran for Stairs, Broxton hit Carlos Ruiz with a pitch.
Greg Dobbs lined out to third base, bringing the Dodgers within one out of a victory. Rollins, however, hit a 1-1 pitch into the right-centerfield gap all the way to the wall and both runners scored easily.
Ryan Howard gave Philadelphia the lead in the first with a two-run homer, but with the Dodgers owning a 4-3 lead in the eighth Sherrill struck out Howard with two men on.
The win went to Brad Lidge, who blew 11 save opportunities and had an 0-8 record in the regular season. He made good on all seven of his save chances last year while the Phillies were on their way to the World Series title and on Monday recorded the final two outs in the top of the ninth.
