ALCS Game 3: New York Yankees at Los Angeles Anaheim

ANAHEIM, Calif., Oct. 19 (UPI) -- A game-winning double by Jeff Mathis in the 11th inning Monday gave the Los Angeles Angels a 5-4 win over the New York Yankees and new hope in the ALCS.

Los Angeles fought back from a 3-0 deficit to take the lead, saw the Yankees tie it in the eighth and then failed to take advantage of a bases-loaded situation in the 10th.

The Angels finally prevailed in the 11th, getting a two-out single by Howie Kendrick off Alfredo Aceves and a double by Mathis that bounced off the left-field wall as Mathis dashed around the bases with the winning run.

Kendrick, who had three hits and scored three times, slid home without a throw and jumped into the arms of Erick Aybar as the Angels celebrated a win that cut their deficit in the best-of-seven series to 2-1.

The Yankees had won their first five post-season games of 2009.

All of New York's runs came on solo homers -- the first three off starter Jered Weaver by Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez and Johnny Damon to give the Yankees a 3-0 lead going into the bottom of the fifth.

Kendrick then hit a homer in the fifth to get the Angels on the board, only their second run in 13 innings, and Vladimir Guerrero tied it with a two-run blast in the sixth.

A one-out triple by Kendrick in the seventh and a sacrifice fly by Maicer Izturis put the Angels in front, but Jorge Posada tied it with another home run in the eighth.

Los Angeles seemed certain to win it in the 10th when Mathis reached third with nobody out. But three ground balls to first baseman Mark Teixeira prevented the Angels from scoring.

The Angels will try to tie the series Tuesday when they host Game 4.
