NEW YORK, Oct. 19 (UPI) -- The National Football League suspended Carolina defensive back Dante Wesley for one game Monday because of a hit on Tampa Bay kick returner Clifton Smith.

The statement released by the NFL said Wesley would forfeit his pay for the lost game.

Smith was waiting to field a punt late in the second quarter Sunday when Wesley left his feet and made helmet-to-helmet contact. Smith suffered a concussion and Wesley was kicked out of the game.

"Wesley committed an unnecessary and unnecessarily dangerous act that is specifically prohibited by the rules," the NFL statement said.
