
DETROIT, Oct. 18 (UPI) -- Cody McLeod scored two goals and Milan Hejduk tallied the decider Saturday in Colorado's 4-3 shootout win over the Red Wings in Detroit.
The Avalanche scored three times in the third period to tie the game and then drop the sputtering Wings to 3-3-1 in the early going of the season.
Rookie Matt Duchene added the fourth Colorado goal and Craig Anderson stopped 28 shots.
Detroit had goals from Justin Abdelkader, Todd Bertuzzi and Valtteri Filppula. Chris Osgood finished with 26 saves.
McLeod scored Colorado's first goal at 9:06 of the third period to cut Detroit's lead to 2-1. He scored again with 2:32 left in regulation to send the contest into overtime.
Hejduk iced the game for Colorado in the shootout after the two teams traded goals in the opening round. Hejduk beat Osgood with a backhander. Anderson then stopped Ville Leino to secure the win.
