NEW YORK, Oct. 18 (UPI) -- A bad throw in the 13th inning allowed Jerry Hairston Jr. to score and give the Yankees a 4-3 win over the Los Angeles Angels in Game 2 of the ALCS.

The win early Sunday at rainy Yankee Stadium gave the Yankees a 2-0 lead in the series, which moves to Anaheim Monday.

Hairston raced home from second when second baseman Macier Izturis threw wild to second in an attempt to force Robinson Cano on a ground ball by Melky Cabrera rather than taking the out at first.

The dramatic play ended a white-knuckle contest in which neither team could shake the other over more than five hours. New York left a dozen runners on base in the game while the Angels stranded 16.

Alex Rodriguez hit a solo home run in the bottom of the 11th to keep the Yankees in the game after Chone Figgins had put Los Angeles ahead by a run with an RBI single in the top half of the inning.

David Robertson (2-0) picked up the win with 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. The loss went to Ervin Santana (0-1), who gave up a pinch-hit single to Hairston, who moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Brett Gardner, then scored from second on Cabrera's grounder and Izturis' error.
