LAS VEGAS, Oct. 16 (UPI) -- Chad Campbell shot a 9-under 62 Friday, the low round of the day, to grab a share of the lead midway through the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.
Campbell had seven birdies along with an eagle at the par-5 ninth and finished 36 holes at the TPC-Summerlin course in 13-under 129. That was the same score posted by first-round co-leader Troy Matteson, who shot a 67 Friday.
Matt Kuchar, who won two weeks ago at the Turning Stone Resort Championship, shared third place at 130 with Ryan Moore, Bob Heintz and Martin Laird. Jim Furyk, who at No. 8 is the highest-ranked player on the PGA Tour money list playing in the event, was among those at 131.
Tom Pernice, who turned 50 last month and who was another of the first-round co-leaders, was also at 131.
Since losing in a three-way playoff at the Masters this year, Campbell has missed the cut in five of the 14 tournaments he has entered and has not has not had a Top 10 finish.
Kuchar, meanwhile, has used the late-season tournament schedule to his advantage by vaulting into 25th place on the money list. Another high finish this week would virtually clinch a spot in all the major tournaments next season.
That would be a big step for a player who has not qualified to compete in the Masters in seven years.
